Nepal Van Java, Jalan Viral and beyond: 7 stops worth the bumpy ride

Viewpoints, villages, a viral road, pine forest and a waterfall. A quick guide to every place our jeep packages visit.

Anyone who has scrolled through photos of Mount Sumbing has probably seen the same few names again and again: a village of stacked houses on a hillside, a road that seems to curl straight out of a postcard, a pine forest that looks made for photographs. Our eight packages combine seven stops on and around the mountain, and it is easy to book a route without really knowing what each place is like. So here is a plain walk-through of every stop, written the way we would describe it from the driver's seat.

One thing before we start. The stops are not all the same kind of place. Some are open viewpoints where the whole point is to stand still and look. Others are villages where life carries on around you, and two are about trees and running water rather than panoramas. Knowing which is which makes it much easier to pick a route you will enjoy.

Silancur Highland

Silancur Highland is the stop that appears most often in our packages, and it is one half of the Sunrise Package. It is a wide, open stretch of hillside, and the appeal is simple: space and sky. On a clear morning the mountain slopes lie in front of you, with farmland stepping down toward the valley and, if the weather is kind, soft cloud sitting in the low ground.

It is a good first stop because there is no effort involved. The jeep takes you most of the way, you step out, and the view does the work. Take a moment before you start photographing and simply look around; the light changes quickly up here, and the first few minutes are often the best.

Nepal Van Java

Nepal Van Java is the other sunrise favourite, and it is included in almost every route we run. The name is a nickname: from a distance, the houses are stacked up the hillside in colourful rows that remind visitors of mountain villages in Nepal, and the label stuck.

What makes it worth the ride is the view from across the slope, where the whole village comes together as one picture. It is also a real place where people live and work, so keep voices down, stay on the paths and ask before pointing a camera at anyone. Visitors who treat it as a village first and a photo spot second tend to have the better time.

Sukomakmur

Sukomakmur is reached with a short motorbike taxi (ojek) ride, which is paid separately from the package price. That surprises some guests, so it is worth knowing in advance and keeping a little cash for it. Your driver will point you to the right ojek and the fare is small compared with the rest of the trip.

The reward is a different angle on the mountain from the other stops. If you like the idea of a stop that feels a little more out of the way, this is the one. Wear shoes with grip, as the last part is not paved.

Jalan Viral

Jalan Viral is the road that made the area famous online, and the name says it all: it is the place everyone has seen on their feed before they ever arrive. It is part of the Medium Trip and all of the Long Trips, and it is a stop where the journey itself is the attraction.

It looks good in photos, but it is better in person, because you are actually riding along it in an open jeep rather than looking at a picture of it. If you are bringing friends who only want one thing from the day, this is probably the stop they have in mind. Our tips for a comfortable ride are worth reading first, since this is where the bumps are most noticeable.

Hutan Pinus Bukit Selfie

Hutan Pinus Bukit Selfie is a pine forest stop on Long Trip 1 and Long Trip 3. After several open viewpoints, it is a welcome change of pace: tall trunks, filtered light and cooler air. It is the stop for guests who feel that a day of panoramas would be better with some shade in the middle.

Children in particular tend to enjoy it, as there is room to wander a little and stretch your legs after the jeep. As the name suggests, there are plenty of spots set up for photos, so you will not struggle to find a good frame.

Curug Silawe

Curug Silawe is a waterfall, found on Long Trip 2 and Long Trip 3. It brings the sound of running water into a day that is otherwise about wind and engines. Paths near a waterfall can be damp, so wear shoes you do not mind getting a little wet, and carry a phone case or dry bag if you plan to take pictures close to the water.

It is also the stop that most changes the feel of the route. If you have seen hillside views before and want something different, it is the reason to choose Long Trip 2 over Long Trip 1.

Wanamukti Sigede

Wanamukti Sigede appears only on Long Trip 3, the full route that covers all seven stops for Rp1.000.000 per jeep. It is the stop that fewer guests see, and for those who book the full route it makes the day feel complete.

Which package should I pick?

Short trips cover two stops for Rp500.000 to Rp550.000 per jeep. The Medium Trip adds Jalan Viral for Rp650.000. Long Trips 1 and 2 cost Rp850.000, and Long Trip 3 covers all seven stops for Rp1.000.000. Every price is per jeep for up to 4 people, with fuel, jeep and driver included.

Split between four people, even the full seven-stop route comes to Rp250.000 each.

If you are still comparing, read our guide on how to pick your jeep route, see what the price includes, and check the packing list before you go. Early risers may also like to know whether the Sunrise Package is worth it.
